Opeth Concert

On October 4th I went to an Opeth concert at the Showbox. First thing to say is that It was AMAZING!

Opeth was, not the first band that played that night. They played with High on Fire. I'm not sure what they were on, but they were kind of just... noise.

I had seen Opeth in concert a few months ago, and I already liked their music, but they were 2nd to last. The final band was DreamTheater, which, the guitarist was good and all, but it didn't match any of the other bands that were playing that night. I can't remember who all did play, but it was at the WaMu.

Anyway, I loved the most recent concert. We tried to get as close to the front as possible, but it was next to impossible. Before they even started we were all shoved in like sardines. I was very happy that I had my boyfriend behind me in that moment, because I didn't want some horny old man or crazed teenager getting the excuse to feel me up from behind. I have a nice behind. I know that ;).

Anyway, after they started, it was very difficult to concentrate on the music while being squished. People behind us were pushing forward, then once it got to the front, they started pushing back. It was very weird.

I did feel like I was violating some personal space of a teenage boy who was obviously too young for anything that close to be legal. So, the other girlfriend and I went out. I was planning on it a little bit because everyone started moshing. I don't do pain.

But what really pushed me to go was Craig saying that he was trying to protect me. That's not what I wanted at all. I didn't want to ruin his experience with his most loved band. So I broke out of the hot and sweaty bodies and went to the back where I could finally breath!

After a while though, I wanted to get a better view, I'm short, and a lot of kids these days are tall. So the other girlfriend and I snaked our way into the pack. She wanted to mosh, I really didn't. So we lost each other and I ended in the back again.

That was the way it was for the first half. Then for the second half I went out on the very edge of the room and I had a very clear view of everyone on stage.

I finally got to really enjoy it. The experience was absolutely mind moving. Seeing them rock so close to where I was made me want to grab Craig so he could come and watch with me. But I had no hope of finding his lone body in the sea of sweat.

I watched Mikael sing and it was magic. I've listened to their CDs and they sound amazing. Never did I imagine they'd sound like that outside of the recording studio. I mean, yeah, I saw them in concert in the spring, but they didn't play too many songs, let alone slow songs.

This time, they could play as long as they wanted. The other band that was supposed to play with them got kicked off the tour in the last stop and they had 2 sets they could do. They played for almost 2 hours!

Their music was fantastic, but so was the time between songs. Mikael was the only one that talked, but he was great. Here's some of the things he said:

(introducing his bandmates--he forgot one)"Oh, and of course you know... that the most important person up here... is me... but on keyboards we have Per Wiberg.

And when they came on for an encore performance before they played Drapery Falls. "Someone once told me, that this song was good to play while you're having sex. Now, I don't know, but here it is."

That's a long song too.

Anyway, They said they were coming back, and I am totally there again!
